Dimitri Payet is 'close' to signing new contract

Dimitri Payet will sign a new five-year contract at West Ham, Sky sources understand.

Payet is understood to be travelling to Upton Park on Thursday evening to finalise the details of the deal.

West Ham confirmed on Tuesday they were in talks with the 28-year-old over a new deal after Sky sources reported that an unnamed Chinese club were prepared to pay £38m for the midfielder.

Payet, whose current deal runs until June 2020, has enjoyed an exceptional debut season in the Premier League, scoring six times and providing four assists to boost the Hammers' bid for European qualification.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's trip to Norwich City, Hammers boss Slaven Bilic said: "I think we are very close to Dimitri signing a new contract. Both parties have the same intention and that is to stay at West Ham.

"If you are playing like he is playing, many clubs will show interest, but we are going to do everything we can to keep him with us.

A statement from West Ham this week reiterated Payet's desire to stay at the club, insisting no demands had been made by the player or his agent.

"The club can confirm that due to Dimitri's outstanding impact since his arrival at the Boleyn Ground, they have initiated amicable and productive talks about an improvement and extension to his contract. Those talks are progressing well and it is hoped they can be concluded shortly.
