Raheem Sterling and Roberto Firmino miss out in Capital One Cup final combined XIs

Phil Thompson and Charlie Nicholas pick their best XIs

We challenged the Soccer Saturday pundits to pick their best combined XIs from Liverpool and Manchester City ahead of the Capital One Cup final.

Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas has opted for just three from Jurgen Klopp's squad, including none of their defenders, while former Anfield man Phil Thompson is unsurprisingly more favourable to his old side.

Both pundits have selected the same midfielders and frontmen, as the likes of Raheem Sterling and Roberto Firmino miss out, with the only differences coming at the back.

Here's who Charlie picked in his best combined XI...

"Joe Hart is a banker between the sticks, I don't think there's too much debating there, but that's certainly not the case in the full-back areas.

"Nathaniel Clyne started really well for Liverpool but has struggled to maintain it while Bacary Sagna has also been solid this season but, on his day, Pablo Zabaleta is the best of the lot.

"On the left, there's Aleksandar Kolarov, but while he's good going forward he isn't the best defender, and it's similar for Alberto Moreno. I've gone with Gael Clichy, once again because of his defensive qualities, although he hasn't hit the heights of his time at Arsenal.

"Vincent Kompany is absolutely nailed on centrally but who else is there? I simply can't have a Liverpool player because of their awful record of defending set-pieces, so mainly because of how he has played when partnering Kompany, I've gone with Nicolas Otamendi

Jamie Redknapp previews the Capital One Cup final

"In the holding role I'd have Lucas Leiva. It looked like Liverpool were desperate to get rid at one point and I wanted to see him at the Arsenal. However, he put in a man-of-the-match performance when they drew at the Emirates and has been key for them ever since.

"In the wider positions I've got David Silva on the right, who has disappointed since he has returned from injury, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt because he's such a great little player who I love watching, and the same goes for Philippe Coutinho.

"Then in the middle it's Yaya Toure. He frustrates me and I'm sure City fans even more so. He's such a selfish player but you give him the ball and he can do something magic.

"Sergio Aguero is another banker. He's been carrying City over the last six weeks and is just world class. Then Daniel Sturridge completes my line-up. When he's fit he's just a fabulous footballer and his goalscoring record for Liverpool is fantastic. His game is a fascination to me. He can do everything on his day. Both would feed off the service. I'd like to think that front five could match Barcelona on their day."

And Thommo selected...

"In goal I have to go with Hart. He's the best in England while Simon Mignolet obviously hasn't had the best campaign.

"Then at right-back it's Clyne, who has had a far better season than Zabatela, while left-back is the most difficult area as I don't think anybody has been good. I'll go for Clichy as well under duress.

"Kompany is nailed-on in central defence and then Martin Skrtel goes alongside him. He has been Liverpool's best defender before his injury.

"Then I've got Lucas in front of my back four for doing the selfless stuff and the work for Toure, who you can't have holding but tends to deliver on the big stage. I've got to have Coutinho and Silva on either wing, they're just two fantastic players.

"I'll have a front two of Sturridge and Aguero. Sturridge is determined to prove himself and when he's on form he has to be in. Then there's Aguero who is one of the best in the world. He's also had his injury problems but I would be shocked if he wasn't in most people's Premier League best XIs."
