Goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard accepts his time at West Brom is likely over and is in talks with Preston over a move to Deepdale.
The 32-year-old Denmark international joined the Baggies from Manchester United last summer but featured just once - in a Capital One Cup game last in September - before linking up with the Lilywhites on loan in February.
Lindegaard has another year left on his contract but, after being relegated to third-choice keeper behind Ben Foster and Boaz Myhill since the former's return from injury, admits he is likely to be moving on.
"I don't see myself back at West Brom, I don't think West Brom see themselves having me back," he said.
"I can't see why it should end up being like that - that would be because we have a contract that we have to respect.
"But they've been good to me since Ben Foster got fit. They've been positive in this whole process about what's going to happen next season, whether it's here or some place else. I can't see myself going back there."
Lindegaard started 19 Premier League games over five years for Manchester United and was keeping David De Gea out of the team at one point when the Spaniard was struggling in his early days in England.
However, after nearly three years without regular senior football, he is keen to nail down a regular spot somewhere.
Asked whether that could be at Preston, he replied: "It's definitely a possibility. We have a dialogue about it and we are getting closer and closer to each other. It's a big possibility."
North End have gone through a raft of loan goalkeepers in recent years, with Lindegaard following Sam Johnstone, Jordan Pickford and Declan Rudd, and manager Simon Grayson would ideally like to begin next term with a permanent replacement.
"You don't know what West Brom are going to do with him but it's an option for us to try and consider," he said of signing Lindegaard.
"The problem for us at times is that these Premier League players are on really big wages, that's something we have to try and see if we can sort a deal out.
"Ultimately, it's a position that we need to tie down on a secure basis for the next couple of years, if possible. But we could down that (loan) route."
