Shanghai Shenhua came from behind to beat Jiangsu Suning 3-2 in a thrilling game in the Chinese Super League

Jiangsu Suning travelled to the Shanghai Hongkou Football Stadium on Saturday in the knowledge that victory over hosts Shanghai Shenhua could take them to within seven points of Chinese Super League leaders Guangzhou Evergrande.

Against the run of play, Jiangsu broke away and opened the scoring after 22 minutes when Ji Xiang's cross was headed home by Roger Martinez as the ball looped into the far corner of the net.

Seven minutes later, however, Shanghai equalised from the penalty spot after Yang Xiaotian fouled Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins with a clumsy challenge in the box, with Colombian midfielder Fredy Guarin making no mistake from the spot.

In an end-to-end contest, Alex Teixeira then released Martinez into the penalty area with a clever ball and he restored his side's lead with a clinical finish for his second goal of the game two minutes before half-time.

However, Shanghai dominated after the break and equalised on the hour-mark when Bai Jiajun's sublime pass put Martins clear in the box and he netted with an accurate finish.

The winning strike was somewhat fortuitous, not that Guarin nor Shanghai's fans cared as the former's blistering drive flew into the far corner of the net past Gu Chao after the ball deflected off Australian Trent Sainsbury.

Shanghai Shenhua are third in the league, four points behind Jiangsu after 21 games played. Guangzhou Evergrande, who have played a game less, hold a 10-point lead.
