Grimsby manager Marcus Bignot made a pitchside apology to fans after his side were thrashed 5-0 at Crewe

Grimsby manager Marcus Bignot made a pitchside apology to the club's fans after his side were thrashed 5-0 at Crewe on Saturday.

Crewe were ruthless in front of goal as they won for the first time in 12 games in the 5-0 Sky Bet League Two thrashing of Grimsby, with Chris Dagnall and George Cooper scoring a brace each.

The defeat means the Mariners now sit 13th in League Two, with manager Bignot far from happy with his team's display.

The 42-year-old took the slightly bizarre decision to speak to the fans pitchside after the match. He apologised for his team's performance and vows to make sure his players do better.

"I apologise. We need to stick together and we will. And we will be fine," he said post-match.

"Once again, I appreciate your support, and I'll make sure those players appreciate it as well.

"You've paid hard-earned money, you work all week and yes I agree we were not acceptable. We will bounce back."
