Jerome Gondorf's stoppage-time winner clinched Darmstadt a 2-1 home win against Schalke as the Bundesliga's bottom club staved off relegation for at least another week.

Darmstadt needed all three points to avoid the drop following Mainz's home win against Hertha Berlin on Saturday and midfielder Gondorf fired home in the third minute of time added on.

Victory for Darmstadt - only their fifth in the Bundesliga this season - lifts them to within 14 points of fourth-bottom Mainz with five games remaining, but they have a vastly-inferior goal difference.

Mario Vrancic had fired Darmstadt into an early lead, but Schalke hit back to equalise through Spanish defender Coke midway through the second half.

Darmstadt were given a let-off just before the hour mark when goalkeeper Michael Esser saved Schalke striker Guido Burgstaller's penalty after Aytac Sulu was deemed to have fouled Daniel Caligiuri.

Werder Bremen kept in touch with the Europa League race as they came from behind to see off Hamburg 2-1 at Weser Stadion.

The away side took the lead after six minutes when Michael Gregoritsch headed home Aaron Hunt's cross.
