Steve Evans endured a miserable afternoon as Mansfield were beaten 3-1 at home by Swindon in Sky Bet League Two.
The Stags rejected an approach from Swindon to speak to Evans about their vacant managerial position at the end of last season, and David Flitcroft's side climbed above their opponents with a convincing display at Field Mill.
Notts County went top of the table with a 2-1 win over Barnet. Veteran striker Shola Ameobi's first of the season gave the Magpies the lead after 16 minutes and Ryan Yates added a second seven minutes after the interval, with Simeon Akinola pulling one back late on.
Luton kept tabs on the other promotion-chasing sides with a thumping 7-1 win over Stevenage. Exeter surrendered top spot after being held to a goalless draw at Wycombe. Forest Green slumped to second bottom with a 4-0 home defeat to Newport.
Tom Pope scored twice as Port Vale climbed out of the relegation places with a 3-1 win over Cheltenham. Yeovil were 2-0 winners against Crewe, Jamie Devitt scored the only goal of the game as Carlisle won at Colchester and Grimsby played out a goalless draw with Crawley.
