As Oumar Niasse is set to face retrospective action for diving, Paul Merson and Ian Wright discuss his actions on The Debate.

Oumar Niasse became the first Premier League player to be charged with successfully managing to deceive a match official, and the subject was discussed by Kelly Cates, Ian Wright and Paul Merson on The Debate on Wednesday evening.

The Everton striker is set to miss Premier League games away to Southampton and at home to West Ham if an Independent Regulatory Commission uphold the decision.

His club have contested the charge, and Wright and Merson were asked if this will act as a deterrent in the bid to eradicate diving within the game.

A panel comprising of a former official, manager and player unanimously decided that Niasse had committed an act of simulation, and Merson feels it has set a dangerous precedent.

But Wright hopes the two-match ban will encourage players to think twice about looking to gain an advantage in future, despite the high stakes involved in retaining one's Premier League status.
