Veteran midfielder signs 12-month contract with Royals

Reading midfielder Brynjar Gunnarsson has signed a new one-year deal at the Madejski Stadium as plans for a return to the Premier League continue to gather pace. The 33-year-old's contract had expired but the Iceland international has agreed to stay for a further 12 months. Reading lost in the Championship play-off semi-finals last season and are therefore focusing on earning promotion under new boss Brendan Rodgers. Royals director of football Nicky Hammond believes Gunnarsson can play an influential role in the pursuit of a place in the top flight. He said: "He is a very good player. His quality gives him great versatility and he continues to set a good example for the younger players. "He has a big part to play this season." Gunnarsson, who joined the club from Watford in 2005, said: "There was never any doubt. I always wanted to stay and the club wanted to me so it was fairly easy to get everything done."
