Sebastien Bassong is relishing the challenge ahead of him at Tottenham after an 'interesting year' with Newcastle.
The defender moved to St James' Park at the start of last season and earned good reviews for some assured performances, but his efforts were not enough to keep the Magpies in the Premier League.
He learned a lot from his spell with Newcastle but insists it is the right time for him to embark on the next chapter of his career.
A switch to White Hart Lane was finalised on Thursday evening and Bassong is delighted to have joined such a prestigious club.
"It has been an interesting year and I learned a lot at Newcastle," said the 23-year-old.
"I'm really happy to have played for Newcastle but had to move to improve myself and make a step forward in my career.
"I'm sure Spurs will be a good thing for me. I'm very, very happy to be here at Spurs. There is a smile on my face.
"Spurs are a famous team in Europe and the world, everyone knows the players here. The manager is famous with a good reputation, that is why I didn't hesitate to come here."
Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson will miss the start of the season through injury and Ledley King has barely trained due to his troublesome knee.
Bassong will face a fight to get in the team once all three are fully fit but he is not worried about such rivalry.
"Every player needs competition to go forward," he added on Spurs TV Online.
"That is what I need, without it I wouldn't feel good, so I am ready for it and it is positive for the team to go forward.
"I know there are a lot of experienced players here and hopefully I can learn from them."
