Striker to quit European football

Mark Viduka is quitting European football and is set to return to Australia to live. The 33-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Newcastle United at the end of last season. He has held talks with the likes of Portsmouth and Fulham, but a deal has failed to materialise. Now, his agent has confirmed that he is heading back to Australia. "I can confirm that Mark will not be seeking another contract in England or Europe and is coming home to Australia to live," Steve Kutner told Australian website The World Game.

New phase

"He's about to enter a new phase in his life and whether that includes playing again in Australia I am not sure. "He's had a superb 11 years or so in the UK, and he's made his mind up to now move on. Mark has other priorities and wants to take his life in a different direction." The former Socceroos captain scored more than 120 goals during his time at Celtic, Leeds United, Middlesbrough and Newcastle.
