Kevin Blackwell has revealed Zurab Khizanishvili had agreed to join Sheffield United before moving to Championship rivals Newcastle United.
Blades boss Blackwell has been looking to bring in a defender on loan and had hoped to add Blackburn Rovers' out-of-favour Zurab Khizanishvili to his squad.
However, the Georgian opted for a three-month spell with Newcastle, leaving Blackwell to look elsewhere for reinforcements.
"We had an agreement with Zurab Khizanishvili, his agent and Blackburn Rovers to bring him in on loan and then at midnight we heard that he had signed for Newcastle," Blackwell told the club's official website.
Bolton Wanderers defender Danny Shittu has also rejected a move to Bramall Lane and Blackwell acknowledged it is proving difficult to secure cover for Chris Morgan and Matthew Kilgallon.
He added: "The top clubs in the Championship are all wanting the same few quality players that are available, but I won't sign just anybody for the sake of it.
"We do have one or two other possibilities in the Premiership, but the problem is telling somebody that they might only play one game.
"Morgs and Killa are without doubt two of the most highly-regarded defenders in the division and potential replacements are bound to ask how long are they likely to be involved."
