Defender agrees contract extension

Skysports.com understands Stoke defender Danny Higginbotham has signed a new deal with the club. The 30-year-old has agreed a one-year extension to keep him at the Britannia Stadium until 2012. Higginbotham has established himself as a key member of Tony Pulis' side since arriving for his second spell at the club last summer. The former Manchester United man has lost his place in the starting XI in recent weeks, but he remains part of Pulis' plans. A number of clubs were thought to be keen on signing the versatile defender on loan, but Stoke have moved to tie him down to a new long-term contract. Higginbotham is the latest Stoke player to agree a new contract, with Ryan Shawcross also signing a contract extension in recent days.
