Steven Naismith is eager to show George Burley what he can do after performing well against Holland in September.
Naismith made his first start for Scotland in the World Cup qualifier, having previously played just eight minutes of international football in 2007.
The 1-0 defeat to Holland ended Scotland's dreams of going to South Africa but Naismith caught the eye with a lively display and admits it is an experience he will always be proud of.
"It was definitely one of the best moments of my football career," said the Rangers forward ahead of Saturday's friendly with Wales.
"I totally didn't expect it. It was a great opportunity for me and hopefully I've done well enough to show the manager that he can trust me in big games in international football.
"There is a lot of competition for places without a doubt."
Happy
The likes of Steven Fletcher, Kenny Miller and James McFadden could be considered among Naismith's rivals for a place in the team, although he can play out wide or through the middle.
Naismith insists he is just happy to be playing for both club and country and does not mind too much about the position.
He said: "You just have to go along with it and take your chance. It's the same when you are first coming through.
"If the manager plays you out of position, you just do it as well as you can and show the manager what you've got.
"Again, it was a case of getting on the pitch and doing well and I thought for the majority of the game we did really well and were unfortunate the result didn't go our way."
