Experienced frontman hoping to make plane to South Africa

Alessandro Del Piero has admitted that he would welcome the opportunity to represent Italy at the 2010 World Cup. The Juventus frontman has seen his 2009/10 campaign blighted by injury, severely restricting his playing time. He is now nearing full fitness, but has been overlooked by national coach Marcello Lippi for a friendly double-header against Holland and Sweden this week. Del Piero is, however, refusing to give up hope of forcing his way back into the international fold in the future. "Me, in South Africa? I have already been there, but I would like to go back there," the 35-year-old told Corriere dello Sport when asked about his ambitions of playing at next summer's World Cup. "Having been a part of the Italy squad at the beginning, I still feel like I'm part of it." Lippi has previously stated that it will be 'difficult' for any outsiders to force their way into his plans, but he may make an exception for Del Piero - a member of his 2006 World Cup-winning squad.
