Vale defender set for surgery

Gareth Owen has visited a specialist after taking another blow to his already fractured cheekbone. The defender was forced off shortly before half-time during Port Vale's 2-2 draw with Torquay on Tuesday. Having sought medical advice about how best to manage the problem, Owen has been advised that surgery is his next logical step. He dislodged the fracture during the tie against the Gulls and needs to fend against suffering any further damage. Owen is set to go under the knife on Friday and will be out of action for between 10 and 14 days.
