Hertha Berlin have given mixed messages over their reported interest in Schalke outcast Albert Streit.
The midfielder has struggled to hold down a regular place in the Schalke starting line-up since signing from Frankfurt in January 2008.
The relationship between player and club has grown so sour that Schalke have taken the 29-year-old to court over an unpaid fine, handed to him for disciplinary reasons.
New Hertha manager Friedhelm Funkel has expressed his interest in the former Cologne man after working with Streit at Frankfurt.
However Hertha general manager Michael Preetz told Bild: "There is no truth in it."
Funkel was more open in his admiration for Streit: "He is an ideal signature. I have no interest in signing a customised player.
"I am out to sign one able to break in and interrupt."
