Burnley manager Owen Coyle is hoping to hold talks with new Portsmouth boss Avram Grant in regards to David Nugent.
The striker is currently on a six-month loan at Turf Moor, but the Clarets have made no secret of their desire to bring him on board on a permanent basis.
They had been hoping that a deal could be struck during the January transfer window, with former Pompey chief Paul Hart prepared to sanction such a switch.
However, the change of personnel at Fratton Park has thrown such a move into doubt.
Coyle admits he is uncertain whether Grant will be keen to have another look at Nugent before deciding what the future holds for the 24-year-old frontman.
The Burnley boss is keen to discuss the matter, though, and is hoping to have answers before the New Year.
"We are not any further forward in terms of dialogue," he said.
"We have an agreement with Portsmouth but we have to see if anything has changed with Avram.
"We tried to have a chat last week but it was difficult. David obviously has a role to play as well in terms of shaping his own career.
"He is a player I like and we will see what the outcome is."
