Argentine signs long-term contract with Man City

Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta has signed a new four-and-a-half year contract with the club. The Argentina international moved to Eastlands from Espanyol in the summer of 2008 and quickly established himself as a regular starter in Mark Hughes' side. He proved a reliable right-back and also showed his versatility by slotting into midfield on occasions. Zabaleta has had to battle harder for a spot since Hughes brought a number of defensive reinforcements to the club during the most recent transfer window. But he has still impressed when given the opportunity and has now committed his future to City until 2014. The 24-year-old's immediate priority is to help City claim maximum points from their festive fixtures. "We need to aim for nine points from these next three games to keep fighting for a good position," he told the club's official website ahead of Saturday's clash with Sunderland. "If we play well enough we can get into the top four. We have the players for big things."
