Port Vale manager Micky Adams is hoping to complete the signing of Lewis Haldane before Saturday's game against Darlington.
The 24-year-old striker has agreed a deal to stay at Vale until the end of the season after a successful loan spell at the club.
However, Haldane faces a race against time to negotiate a deal with parent club Bristol Rovers regarding the remainder of his contract at the Memorial Stadium.
"I haven't seen Lewis since Christmas Eve, but I hope we can get him available for Saturday," said Adams in The Sentinel.
"It's just a matter of making sure everything is done and dusted at Bristol's end.
"As far as we're concerned he's our player, but I suppose you should never say that until he has signed on the dotted line."
Meanwhile, 30-year-old midfielder Jason Jarrett's future at Vale is unclear after his contract expired on Monday.
He has made 13 appearances for the club since joining in September but Adams is unsure whether he wants him to stay.
He added: "I plan to speak to Jason this week, but I'm not prepared to say whether I want him to stay or not until I've spoken to him."
