Bayer Leverkusen's Manuel Friedrich is on the verge of signing a two-year contract extension, with the option for an additional 12 months, after verbally agreeing a deal.
The defender's current terms were set to expire at the end of the season, but discussions over the winter break in Germany have proved successful.
When Friedrich puts pen-to-paper the 30-year-old will be tied to Bundesliga leaders Leverkusen until 2012, with an optional additional year based upon performances.
The club's chief executive, Wolfgang Holzhauser, told Bild: "Over the Christmas break, we have achieved an agreement with his advisors. All that is missing is his signature.
"We are glad we can keep Friedrich with us for three more years, he has earned this contract extension."
Holzhauser added: "We have found a compromise, in the third year the conditions are performance-based."
