Bristol Rovers goalkeeper Steve Phillips has rejected a permanent deal at Crewe Alexandra, but could extend his loan at Gresty Road.
Phillips has spent the past two months on loan with the League Two club and was offered a two-and-a-half year deal to stay with the Railwaymen.
However, he has been unable to negotiate a satisfactory severance package from Rovers after admitting he can not accept such a large drop in salary.
"I won't be signing permanently," Phillips told The Sentinel.
"Basically, talks have broken down. Rovers are refusing to make up the difference in wages. The difference is too much for me to consider.
"It is disappointing, but there isn't a lot else I can do."
Crewe could now look to keep Phillips on loan for the rest of the season and the 31-year-old is planning to hold talks with manager Dario Gradi.
He added: "There is still the possibility of a loan deal until the end of the season.
"It's something I'll have to think about if that is the case because there is a lot to sort out. But I'll sit down with Dario on Thursday and we'll know more then."
