David Nugent admits he is keen to stay at Burnley if the club retain their Premier League status after conceding he expects to leave Portsmouth in the summer.
The England cap has rejoined Burnley on loan for the rest of the season after scoring three goals in 17 appearances during his first stint at Turf Moor.
He has struggled to make a sustained impact at Portsmouth since his move from Preston in 2007 and does not anticipate being at Fratton Park for the start of next season.
A permanent deal at Burnley appeals to Nugent, providing manager Brian Laws can prevent the club suffering a swift return to the Championship.
"I'm trying to keep myself in the shop window - I'm only on loan and I think I'll be leaving Portsmouth in the summer," said Nugent.
"If Burnley stay up then I'll be looking to stay."
Meanwhile, after experiencing Pompey's troubles at close quarters in recent weeks, Nugent hopes the financially crippled club can also avoid relegation.
Feeling sorry
Asked if he felt he was leaving a sinking ship, Nugent said: "Yes, I could well be.
"Nobody knows what's going on at the football club and I feel sorry for the staff and players.
"If they aren't getting paid, then hopefully the new owner that is coming in can sort it all out and steady the ship.
"I've not been getting paid either - Burnley pay Portsmouth and then Portsmouth pay me, so I'm in the boat with them really.
"It's hard for them and the results show that. But I went training with them and the spirits are all right, the lads are up for it and they are trying to do their best for Portsmouth.
"I do hope they get out of the relegation zone because I have a lot of time for Portsmouth and the fans, so hopefully it will get sorted.
"I would love for both of them to stay up, but I'm at Burnley now so first and foremost it's Burnley."
