Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has been handed a major fitness boost with the news that striker Kenwyne Jones could be fit to face Birmingham on Saturday.
Jones was substituted at half-time during the Black Cats' 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Sunday with a groin injury and Bruce initially feared that the Trinidad and Tobago international could be ruled out for a month.
However, a scan has revealed that Jones has not suffered any lasting damage and is in line to face the Blues at the Stadium of Light.
Bruce told the club's official website: "Kenwyne's had a scan and thankfully, the damage isn't as bad as we first feared.
"It's too early to say whether he will make Saturday's game, but we will keep an eye on him, give him all the treatment we can and keep our fingers crossed."
