Clough keen to land Pompey striker

Derby County manager Nigel Clough has confirmed he is keen to sign Portsmouth striker Tommy Smith on loan. The 29-year-old has made only 11 Premier League appearances for Pompey this season after joining from Watford. The Rams are just five points clear of the Championship drop zone and Clough is keen to bolster his attacking options. However, Clough fears Smith's goal against Hull City at the weekend might force manager Avram Grant into keeping him on.

Inquiry

"We've made an inquiry to Portsmouth," confirmed Clough. "But it's a bit difficult with the situation down there at the moment. "It's one we'll keep pursuing. As soon as we make the inquiry, he goes and plays and scores. "The major snag is the FA Cup, which I'm sure he'll want to be involved in. "We made an inquiry last week and we've been trying to get in touch with the agent, the administrators and the manager to see if Tommy wants to come or not."
