David Weir believes Kyle Lafferty is beginning to show the kind of promise Rangers always knew he had.
The Gers splashed out £3million to take the Northern Ireland international striker from Burnley in 2008, but have yet to see a noticeable return on that investment.
Injuries and indiscretions have blighted the 22-year-old's time at Ibrox, and explain why he has struggled to make an impact.
Lafferty did, however, put in an eye-catching performance during the 3-1 win over Aberdeen on Wednesday and Rangers club captain Weir feels the youngster is starting to shake off his shackles.
He said: "It's not easy coming to play for Rangers and he has only been here a short period of time. Sometimes it takes longer than others.
"Some of the great Rangers players took a little while to settle.
"Some people can hit the ground running and become Rangers players overnight but some players take longer.
Ovation
"Kyle has got all the attributes to be a big success here.
"You saw the ovation he got when he scored. The fans want him to do well and he wants to do well and it's just a matter of him putting all the pieces together.
"There is no doubt he has all the pieces, it's just a matter of him putting them all together now at the right time."
Victory in midweek helped to extend Rangers' lead at the top of the SPL to 13 points, with Old Firm rivals Celtic trailing in their wake.
Walter Smith's side now know they can claim the crown with a win over Dundee United next week, but Weir insists no-one at Ibrox is taking anything for granted.
He said: "It's getting closer for us hopefully but there is still a bit of work to be done.
"This was a big result for us after Saturday's game. To get a couple of wins quickly goes a long way but there is still some hard work to be done."
