Jozy Altidore has apologised for his straight red card in the defeat to Sunderland that left Hull City on the brink of Premier League relegation.
The on-loan Villarreal striker will not play for the Tigers again this season after collecting a three-match ban for a head-butt on Alan Hutton in first-half stoppage time at the KC Stadium on Saturday.
With Hull already having conceded Darren Bent's goal in what stayed as a 1-0 defeat, Altidore has been widely criticised for reacting to provocation from Hutton, who was also dismissed.
The 20-year-old has therefore felt the need to try and build bridges with Hull fans and has issued an apology via his Twitter page.
He wrote on Sunday: "I'm so sorry about yesterday. Made a stupid, immature and costly mistake.
"I apologise to Hull City and the fans who I let down. I let my emotions get the best of me and lost my composure. Believe it or not this year playing for Hull was to date the best trip I've ever been on."
