Reading boss Brian McDermott is hoping Ivar Ingimarsson can be persuaded to sign a new contract.
The Icelandic defender will see his current deal at the Madejski Stadium expire at the end of the season.
His potential availability is reported to have pricked the attention of other clubs, with Bristol City said to be among those monitoring his situation.
McDermott, though, believes Ingimarsson could yet choose to extend his seven-year association with the Royals.
"I've spoken to Ivar and I want him to stay. He's our skipper and he's got so much experience," he told the
Reading Chronicle.
"Now the club and Ivar have to come to an arrangement. If that can be done he will stay. If it can't he may move on because he's a Bosman.
"But I spoke to Steve Coppell (Bristol City boss) last week and mentioned a few things, but Ivar wasn't on the agenda."
Impressed
Meanwhile, Reading have taken Tooting and Mitcham defender Mitchell Nelson on trial.
The 20-year-old played 90 minutes for the club's reserve side on Monday and made a positive first impression on McDermott.
"Steve Shorey (recruitment officer) heard about him and we have a good relationship with the Tooting and Mitcham manager Billy Smith," explained the Royals boss.
"He played in a game for Crystal Palace and Steve liked him so we brought him into training.
"He played for the reserves at centre-back and right-back and he acquitted himself really well. He's very young but he was at Colchester as a youngster so he's got pedigree, we like him so we'll see."
