Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross has admitted playing for England in the World Cup finals in South Africa may be beyond him.
Shawcross has endured a tough conclusion to the season after his involvement in the challenge that broke the leg of Arsenal starlet Aaron Ramsey, which was followed up a succession of ankle and foot injuries.
But the defender returned to the Stoke starting XI for the first time in 10 matches in the 0-0 draw with Everton on Saturday, helping earn the Potters a clean sheet in what was an impressive display from the 22-year-old.
Shawcross feels making the 23-man cut will be too much of an ask, though, despite revealing he feels back to his best after a difficult two months.
"It has faded a bit as I have been out so long. You can never say never but my main aim is to play well for Stoke first of all," he said.
"There is always hope but the manager usually picks on form and fitness and it has been the hardest two months of my career. That might count against me.
"The people who needed to be there were there for me and I thank them for that. I am delighted to be back on the pitch.
"I was a bit off the pace against Chelsea, which was not unexpected, but feel much sharper now. I am feeling good and confident."
