Luke Young has confessed he will be sad to leave Aston Villa if he is forced out of the door this summer.
The former England right-back has not been a part of manager Martin O'Neill's plans this season, with Carlos Cuellar and Habib Beye the Villa boss' preferred choices in the right-back role.
Young initially was a first-team regular after signing from Middlesbrough two years ago for £5.5million, but has seen his chances limited through injury and personal matters that may leave him with no choice but to move on.
Rumours of a fall-out between player and manager began to circulate, with Young's fleeting appearances in a Villa shirt often coming out of position at left-back.
Young however denied the rumours, stating that he had just not been given as much of a chance as the other players competing.
"I've been fighting for my position but it never seems as if it's been a fair fight," said Young in the Birmingham Mail.
"I don't want to leave Aston Villa because it's a great club, but I don't know what more I've got to do to get into the team.
"I feel fitter than I've ever felt, I'm in the shape of my life, and I think my form has been good whenever I have played.
"It just seems that however hard I work in training or however well I do in games that I don't get judged by the same standards as some players."
Regardless of his issues with a lack of appearances, Young was gracious to the supporters for his time at Villa Park, and thanked them for their continued backing of him despite a difficult second season with the club.
"The fans have been fantastic and it was great to get that reception when I came on in the last game the other week," he added.
"I think it was a little bit of an ironic cheer because they probably feel a bit sorry for me because I've not been involved that much.
"But I've always got on really well with the fans and that's another reason why I'll be sad if I have to leave."
