Joachim Low felt Miroslav Klose should have been 'more careful' against Serbia, but the Germany striker believes his red card was harsh.
Germany failed to build on a dominant opening performance in the World Cup by following up the 4-0 thrashing of Australia with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Serbia.
The task in Port Elizabeth was made more difficult by the first-half dismissal of Klose, who was cautioned for a foul on Branislav Ivanovic early in the game before being shown a second yellow card for a trip on Dejan Stankovic.
Both bookings appeared to be harsh on the experienced striker, but Germany coach Low suggested that Klose should have erred on the side of caution with his second challenge.
"Klose should have had to be more careful there," said Low.
Ticking off
However, Bayern Munich striker Klose believes Spanish referee Alberto Undiano should have been more lenient, insisting he did not merit a second yellow card.
"I would have liked to help the team," said Klose.
"I tried to play the ball and it was no foul. The referee should have given me a ticking off instead of showing me the yellow.
"The team tried everything in the second half, they played well and fought hard."
Germany also missed a second-half penalty through Lukas Podolski, but Low remains confident his team will reach the last 16 despite the tight nature of Group D.
Low said: "We were not as dominant as we had planned.
"Still we have enough quality to get through and we must not let our heads go down. We still have our fate in our own hands to reach the last 16."
