Jose Enrique insists Newcastle must be realistic in their approach this season as they prepare for a return to the Premier League.
The Magpies enjoyed a successful campaign last term, romping to the Championship title to seal their promotion, and expectations are high as they head into the top flight.
But while insisting Chris Hughton's side have plenty to be positive about ahead of next month's opener at Manchester United, Spanish defender Enrique is wary of the team setting themselves unworkable targets.
"I think we need to be realistic," said Enrique.
"We played in the Championship last year and won it. I think we have a good squad, but we can't get too carried away.
"We haven't signed too many players yet and the Premier League is a very difficult league. We need to be a little bit quiet. We need to see what the division is like, but whatever else happens, the most important thing is that we are still a Premier League team at the end of next season.
"This is a club that can play in the Champions League or the Europa League - but not now. Not yet. We played in the Championship last year, now we play in the Premier League, but we cannot expect to achieve massive things overnight."
