Skysports.com understands Portsmouth are preparing to offer a contract to former goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown.
The 29-year-old shot-stopper was released by the club at the end of the season following their relegation from the Premier League, but he recently went on tour with Pompey to America.
With David James' future seemingly away from Fratton Park, it is thought new manager Steve Cotterill has lined Ashdown up as the potential No.1 keeper.
Ashdown, who came through the ranks at Reading, has never been a regular at any of his previous teams, although he spent six years at Portsmouth before his departure.
He made 53 first-team appearances during his time at the club, 42 of those coming in league competition.
The South Coast outfit have been in financial difficulty of late, as they prepare for a campaign in the Championship.
But it is understood that any deal for Ashdown would be subject to the current Football League transfer embargo.
