Gary Caldwell is confident James McArthur is ready to make an impact in the Premier League, but believes losing Titus Bramble will be a blow to Wigan Athletic.
Highly-rated midfielder McArthur is finalising a move to the DW Stadium after Wigan agreed a fee with his current club Hamilton.
McArthur will join former Accies team-mate James McCarthy in England and Latics defender Caldwell feels it is the right time for the 22-year-old to make the move.
"For years he has been tipped to come down here, but I think he was better staying at Hamilton and getting games and experience," said Caldwell.
"He is probably ready to come now and have this challenge.
"Obviously James McCarthy did so well last year - hopefully James McArthur can follow in his footsteps and we don't get too confused with their names!
"It is the right time for him to come down and try to get into a team in the Premier League."
However, as McArthur arrives at Wigan, Bramble is poised to leave for Sunderland and Caldwell will be disappointed to see his fellow centre-half move on.
Caldwell added: "He is one of the best defenders in the league.
"I had a good relationship with him last year and it would be a blow."
