Chelsea midfielder Florent Malouda hopes the standard set in the opening day demolition of West Brom can be kept up for the duration of the campaign.
The Blues kicked-off their season with a 6-0 thrashing of the Baggies at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with Malouda bagging a brace in the process.
The Premier League champions put West Brom's defence to the sword thanks to a hat-trick from Didier Drogba and a strike from Frank Lampard, and Frenchman Malouda hopes to maintain the level of performance.
"The season is long and we have to make sure that is the standard," he told the club's official website.
"If we try to improve on how we did last season then I think we won't be far from first place at the end of the season."
France international Malouda had an abject summer as Les Bleus flopped to a catastrophic World Cup campaign in South Africa.
This was followed up by a disappointing pre-season with Chelsea but the 30-year-old says the result was a great response to a tough summer.
"That is the perfect reaction to our bad pre-season," he added. "It is important for us to have a good start because we are champions and we know everyone wants to beat us, so to win this way is a good way to remind everyone that we want to remain champions.
"We lost four games in a row in pre-season and that never happens at Chelsea but we knew that when the season starts, all the players would switch on.
"A lot of players arrived back late because of the World Cup so it takes time and we know we have to be patient. We still have things to improve because we are not ready.
"We didn't concede any goals against West Bromwich and now with the goals we scored we have the confidence back up front."
