Pompey manager dismisses striker link

Steve Cotterill has dismissed suggestions that he is interested in bringing West Ham striker Frank Nouble to Portsmouth on loan. Reports had indicated earlier this week that the Pompey manager was considering a move for the highly-rated 18-year-old. Nouble spent time with West Brom and Swindon last season and is once again being tipped to go out on loan as he does not figure in Avram Grant's immediate plans. However, Cotterill maintains that he has not considered a swoop for Nouble as he doubts whether the youngster would strengthen his starting XI. The Pompey manager is keen to bring in proven performers to make sure the South Coast club stay competitive in the Championship.

Careful

Speaking about Nouble, Cotterill told The News: "I had a couple of calls from a couple of people. I have no idea where that has come from. "He went to Swindon and ended up on the bench. I don't want to fill our bench, I want to fill our team. "We have to be very careful on who we bring in. I want a player for Saturday not one for every day of the week. "If he was on the bench at League One level, why would we want him in our team? "I'm not saying I wouldn't want him as one of our many strikers, but we need a few more nows at this moment in time - people who have been and done a little bit."
