Derby County are preparing to sell striker Luke Varney before the end of the summer transfer window.
The 27-year-old is not part of manager Nigel Clough's first-team plans this season, and a number of clubs are looking to bring in the player on loan.
Varney moved to the Rams on loan from Charlton Athletic in November 2008 and joined on a permanent basis in January 2009, but has made only eleven starts since.
The former Crewe Alexandra forward made his first start for the club in 15 months against Cardiff City having spent virtually the whole of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.
Bristol City are reportedly interested in bringing Varney to Ashton Gate, where he could rekindle an exciting partnership with Nicky Maynard that made both players so sought after during their days at Crewe.
"There is still interest in Luke for a loan but there is also the possibility of a permanent deal," said manager Nigel Clough.
"That interest could be stepped up this week.
"We have got nearly two weeks, so there is still plenty of time and I think, historically, things happen in the final week or last few days of the transfer window.
"We are doing what everybody is doing - making calls and lining players up, that sort of scenario.
"We keep asking and keep waiting.
"There are one or two things in the offing at the moment, both ins and outs, so we will see what happens."
