Rams striker set to move on

Out of favour frontman Luke Varney is 'very close' to securing a switch away from Derby County. The Rams have been looking to move the striker on all summer, as he is one of the top earners at Pride Park. As he is not part of Nigel Clough's future plans for the club, they are hoping to get him off the wage bill before the transfer window closes. Several clubs have expressed an interest in taking Varney off Derby's hands, with loan deals and permanent moves touted.

Risk

It appears as though one of those approaches is about to pay off, with Clough having left Varney out of his squad for Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Coventry for fear of an injury scuppering an imminent agreement. "We are very close to agreeing a deal with a couple of clubs for Luke and obviously we were not in a position to risk any injury that might jeopardise that," said coach Gary Crosby. Varney initially linked up with Derby in November 2008 before completing a permanent move from Charlton the following January. He has, however, been restricted to just 11 starts in the last two years and spent the majority of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.
