Newcastle boss Chris Hughton hopes the future of Steven Taylor can be resolved soon following their win over Accrington Stanley in the Carling Cup.
The Magpies sealed their place in the next round of the competition with a 3-2 victory in an entertaining cup affair at the Fraser Eagle Stadium on Wednesday night.
The success in Lancashire came via goals from Ryan Taylor, Shola Ameobi and Peter Lovenkrands but the Premier League side were pushed all the way by their League Two opponents, who scored through Ray Putterill and Sean Hessey.
But the win was overshadowed by news earlier in the day that defender Taylor had been transfer-listed following unsuccessful contract discussions.
Asked whether he thinks the 24-year-old will leave Newcastle before the transfer window closes, Hughton told Sky Sports: "We hope not. It's very much between Steven's representatives and the club.
"It was very much a club decision (to put Taylor on the transfer list) and there's still time to go and I hope it will be resolved."
Hughton refused to state whether Taylor would be part of Newcastle's 25-man squad but he did reflect on Wednesday's win.
"We came here with a young side and there was a risk in that but we felt we would have enough quality to get to the next round," added Hughton.
"We could have made it more comfortable for ourselves, particularly in the second half but it was the cup tie we expected."
