Watford have begun talks with Birmingham City to extend the loan deal of Jordon Mutch, according to Hornets boss Malky Mackay.
The 18-year-old has made an impact at Vicarage Road since arriving on an initial one-month loan deal in the summer, making his debut start for Watford in their 1-0 defeat to Leeds last month.
With his current deal set to expire next week, Mackay is keen to tie the young midfielder down on a longer loan contract.
"We are currently in talks with Birmingham City to extend his stay with us till Christmas," Mackay told skysports.com.
"He has integrated well into the group and wants to push himself on by playing regular Championship football rather than playing in the reserves at Birmingham.
"It is a great learning curve for these guys coming down from the Premier League because the Championship is a tough division and it isn't something that everyone can cope with."
The Whites defeat marked Watford's first loss of the Championship season, and former Scotland international Mackay has been impressed with their start to the campaign.
"Many people tipped us to struggle at the start of the season, so to come away with one win and two draws from four games is a pretty decent return," he added.
"It was nip and tuck against Leeds last week, as they got an early goal and shut up shop for the rest of the game.
"Overall, I've been happy with the start that we have had, especially when you consider the youthful aspect of the squad and also the amount of investment other clubs have been able to make in the summer in comparison to us."
