Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Nemanja Vidic will captain Manchester United in Sunday's clash with Liverpool.
The Red Devils manager revealed earlier this week that Gary Neville would no longer wear the armband because he did not play every week.
With Ryan Giggs in a similar situation at a late stage of his career, there was plenty of discussion about whether Ferguson would turn to Vidic or Rio Ferdinand.
Ferdinand has been the regular stand-in over the past few years and was named England captain by Fabio Capello when he decided to remove the job from John Terry.
The 31-year-old was United skipper on Tuesday when Vidic missed the UEFA Champions League opener with Rangers, but it seems his recent injury problems have counted against him.
It will be Serbian centre-back Vidic who leads the team out at Old Trafford, as he has done in all four Premier League matches so far this season.
"As I explained last week, what we wanted was someone who was consistently available for us," Ferguson told MUTV.
"Everyone recognises Nemanja Vidic would always be there. He has been fit all season and you don't leave him out of the team unless you are going to rest him.
"He started the campaign as captain and it will stay that way."
