Steve Bruce is assessing the aftermath of Sunderland's Carling Cup defeat, with several players struggling for the weekend trip to Liverpool.
Sunderland lost 2-1 at home to West Ham in the third round on Tuesday after Bruce made just two changes from the team which held Arsenal at the weekend.
Bruce saw Anton Ferdinand, Kieran Richardson and Asamoah Gyan all pick up injuries after acknowledging he made a mistake in not making more changes.
And, with John Mensah and Michael Turner also suffering with injuries, Bruce is facing a selection dilemma for Saturday's Premier League game at Liverpool.
He said: "That's the aftermath and that's always the worry - that's why people do change, and we will have to pick the pieces up of that.
"It looks as if we have three centre-backs missing - Ferdinand, Turner and Mensah - for the weekend.
"The goal will do Gyan the world of good. The idea was to get some fitness work into him, but that has backfired too if he has picked up a hamstring too.
"But we don't think he is as bad as Richardson and Ferdinand. Kieran's done his hamstring and we'll see how bad it is. Ferdinand has a hamstring too."
