Yossi Benayoun has revealed that the Achilles injury that has ruled him out for six months was dismissed as a 'small tear' by Chelsea.
The Blues announced on Tuesday that Benayoun was set to undergo surgery which would leave him sidelined until around April.
The midfielder had been struggling with his Achilles for some time but the extent of the problem did not become apparent until the midfielder reported for international duty with Israel last week.
Benayoun says that he had undergone several scans at Stamford Bridge but the medical team were not too concerned about what they had found.
The 30-year-old insists he is still not experiencing any discomfort, but is puzzled as to how the club missed such a serious injury.
"The entire situation is very strange," he said. "I had three MRI scans and three ultrasounds under the Chelsea doctors and they all said it was just a small tear.
"So I went over to Israel ready to play and they told me it was a big tear.
"Chelsea were sure it was something small. They do not understand how they missed it.
"They said it is unusual to have such a big tear and not be in terrible pain. Even now I am not in pain but I cannot take one step by myself until I undergo surgery."
