Midfielder wants team-mates to remain focused amid speculation

Michael Carrick has urged his Manchester United team-mates to remain focused amid the speculation over Wayne Rooney's future. Rooney confirmed on Wednesday that he intends to leave Old Trafford, citing his concerns over the club's ambitions. The striker's statement came prior to United's UEFA Champions League tie against Bursaspor, which the Red Devils ultimately won 1-0. And midfielder Carrick is hopeful the team can continue to ignore the Rooney stories and focus on matters on the pitch. "You have to distance yourself from it," he said. "You have no choice. "Obviously, the player and the club are huge, not just in England but around the world. It is big news.

Atmosphere

"But we can only control what happens out on the pitch. That is all we can be focused on." Reflecting on the victory at Old Trafford which ensures United are two points clear at the top of Group C, Carrick added: "It was a funny atmosphere. "But we had a job to do. We needed to get a result that would put us in a better position for the group. "Nothing changed in that respect. "I certainly didn't see it as extra pressure. We have that anyway."
