Pompey boss admits squad depth is a problem

Portsmouth boss Steve Cotterill admits that a lack of squad depth will likely prevent him from sending youngster Nadir Ciftci out on loan. The 18-year-old is highly rated at Pompey, and started the season with some impressive displays as Cotterill had to call upon him due to his threadbare squad. The Dutch midfielder has been replaced by loanee Liam Lawrence in the first team, and Cotterill would like to see Ciftci make a short-term move to keep match fitness. However, with Pompey still struggling to add to their squad following the long-running takeover saga, the former Notts County and Cheltenham boss admitted that he would have to hold fire.

Problem

"Whenever an injury kicks in it's a problem for us," he told The News. "We have to change our system or we're down to just our young boys coming on. "If anything happens to our wide men, we're down to Nadir Ciftci. "All of a sudden Nadir hasn't played for a couple of months, and he would have lost fitness without a shadow of a doubt. "We need him to go out on loan for a month, run around and get his fitness. That's what I want to do, but we haven't got that luxury."
