Centre-back to get second opinion on troublesome injury

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has revealed Daniel Agger will see a specialist about his calf injury. The defender has not featured for the Reds since the 2-2 draw with Sunderland in late September and the club have decided to send the Denmark international to London in a bid to cure the ailment. Agger has endured an injury-plagued career at Anfield since joining from Brondby in 2006 and has already had foot and back operations during his time with the club. But Hodgson is hopeful that Liverpool, who welcome Europa League opponents Napoli on Thursday, will have the centre-half back sooner rather than later. "He has a fairly serious calf problem and will travel to London today to see another specialist for a second opinion," said the Reds boss ahead of Thursday's clash. Hodgson will be without Joe Cole, Dirk Kuyt and Fabio Aurelio for the visit of Napoli, but Glen Johnson should be fit from a thigh problem while Ryan Babel could be on the bench following a rib injury. And the Liverpool tactician believes the casualty list will decline rapidly over the coming weeks.

Improving

"The injury situation is gradually improving," he added. "Glen Johnson has been training since the start of the week, which is very positive. Dirk Kuyt and Fabio Aurelio are still training separately, or in Daniel Agger's case not at all. "But when it comes to Aurelio and Kuyt, they are both out on the training field, training individually trying to get over their injuries. "Ryan Babel has actually trained with us as well since the start of the week, despite the severe bruising on his ribs. "He has done well to get back as quickly as he has done because bruised ribs are a tricky injury because if you take another bang on them it can be very, very painful. "I'm not certain about his participation tomorrow night, but at least he's back in training and could certainly be ready for the weekend. "Brad Jones is another slight injury worry we have, but again I think a lot of these players will be fit for the weekend game against Chelsea and that means we've got a pretty large squad to choose from tomorrow night."
