Matt Taylor has urged Bolton to keep hold of the club's top players if they want to carry on impressing in the Premier League.
The Trotters have enjoyed surprise success so far this season and currently sit fifth in the table having lost just two games.
Manager Owen Coyle, however, is facing a battle to hang on to defender Gary Cahill and striker Johan Elmander when the transfer window comes around in January.
Both players have been instrumental in maintaining Bolton's good form this term, with prolific Elmander having already notched six goals.
But Trotters chairman Phil Gartside is apparently willing to offload the duo in the New Year in a bid to reduce the club's debt.
Midfielder Taylor feels allowing the club's star performers to depart the Reebok Stadium could put the progress made under Coyle at risk.
"It's up to him (Elmander) to discuss with the manager what happens from here," said Taylor in The Daily Star.
"I know one thing, though, if he carries on scoring goals, he'll certainly be sought after.
"The main thing for the club, I would suggest, is to make sure that we keep hold of our important players - and Johan is definitely one of those.
"It's a really interesting time for us at the moment. We're doing well and getting the results we deserve, so there's no reason why we can't maintain the league position.
"All we have got to do is go into each game believing we can win. If we do that, I'd suggest that more often than not we'll get the results we deserve."
Despite Bolton's encouraging start, Taylor has urged his team-mates to keep their feet on the ground as they prepare for a challenging run of fixtures over the Christmas period, including trips to Manchester City and Chelsea.
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves," he added. "We're only a third of the way through the season, so it's obviously going to be a big battle.
"From now until Christmas is going to be really important. We have got some really big games coming up."
