Blackpool goalkeeper Matt Gilks is facing around two months on the sidelines with a broken kneecap.
The news comes as a major setback to Seasiders boss Ian Holloway with Gilks having been in good form so far this season.
Former Rochdale shot-stopper Gilks has appeared in 12 of Blackpool's 13 top-flight games this season, only missing the 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa recently.
He was restored to the entirely-changed starting XI for clash with West Ham last time out and kept a clean sheet until he was forced out of the action at the interval with the problem
The 28-year-old has played a key role in the Championship play-off winners defying the critics to make a solid start to their debut Premier League campaign, with 15 points garnered from their opening 13 matches.
But the untimely injury to Gilks will see him miss the next two months of action, with a return in January on the cards.
"He's got a cracked patella, which is your kneecap," confirmed Holloway.
"If you can believe it he did it taking a goalkick but played on for 20 minutes until half-time.
"We knew it was sore but, gracious me, how brave is Matt?
"It's bad news. He is going to have to have it wired up and pinned up to get better and it could take a couple of months."
Ghana international Richard Kingson was handed the gloves at Villa Park and stepped into the breach in the 0-0 draw at Upton Park and can now expect an extended run in the side.
Young goalkeeper Mark Halstead has been recalled from his loan spell at Barrow to provide cover for Kingson with the fit-again Paul Rachubka currently ineligible after not being named in the 25-man Premier League squad at the start of the season due to a knee injury.
