Florent Malouda has called for the rest of the Chelsea team to take more responsibility in the absence of captain John Terry.
The Blues skipper is facing a period on the sidelines with a nerve problem in his leg, while a number of other senior players are also unavailable at present.
Frank Lampard and Alex are injured, while Michael Essien will still be suspended for Saturday's clash with Birmingham.
Malouda accepts that it will be tough to cope without such key men but is determined to help Chelsea bounce back from their surprise 3-0 loss to Sunderland.
He is ready to display his own leadership qualities and wants everyone who takes to the field at St Andrews to know that a repeat performance is not acceptable.
"This is a difficult moment for us because we have to carry on without a lot of players who are injured," said the midfielder.
"These are important players because they are our leaders.
"Now we have to trust our squad to deal with these problems.
"My role for France is to be a leader and now I have to do the same thing for Chelsea.
"We all have to take on extra responsibility because we were very disappointed to lose to Sunderland like that.
"Everything was wrong in that game. There are no positives at all when you lose 3-0 at home.
"Now we have to analyse where we failed and come back much stronger against Birmingham."
It is unclear when Terry might be fit to return and Malouda recognises how important it is for Chelsea to keep their advantage in the title race.
"We are still top of the league and have a good chance to stay there," he said.
"It is a difficult moment for JT, and I know he is trying everything he can to come back quickly."
