Leon Barnett has apologised for throwing the ball at referee Simon Hooper after his dismissal on Saturday.
The incident occurred in the dying moments as the Norwich man conceded a penalty at Carrow Road, giving visitors Portsmouth a 2-0 win.
Barnett, booked earlier for a second-half foul, was enraged at seeing red after hauling down David Nugent.
In a moment of madness, the 25-year-old picked up the football and threw it at the referee, striking Hooper on the hip.
Currently on loan from West Brom, Barnett was quick to apologise but is likely to be handed an extended ban by the Football Association.
"I apologised to the ref straight after the game," Barnett told The Sun.
"I also said sorry to the gaffer, Paul Lambert, for my actions. I knew immediately what I did was wrong.
"What happened was out of character for me and I wanted to apologise for doing what I did."
